Strategic consulting to healthcare clients                                         

Assess markets for new products, provide strategy expertise, translate implications of health policy into practical business tactics, and provide program management around major initiatives.

Recent engagements:

  • Managed set of initiatives, including a clinical registry and a learning collaborative focused on reducing NTSV cesarean sections for a national specialty society.

  • Providing technical assistance about patient reported outcomes collection for participants in Medicare value based payment program.

  • Advising research arm of large, integrated delivery system on the content for consumer and purchaser facing publications

  • Provided portfolio management for major CA philanthropy focused on opioid safety and reduction.

  • Provided technical assistance around program design of MediCal program to provide health homes for patients with complex conditions.  Initiative involves philanthropic funders, state agencies, private payers, and diverse delivery system partners.

  • Directed a national collaborative focused on identifying and disseminating best practices for using patient reported outcomes (PROs) in research, quality improvement and direct patient care.

  • Advised innovation arm of major integrated delivery system seeking to develop and commercialize digital tools to collect PROs and enhance patient-provider interactions.

Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH)           San Francisco, CA                                                                  

Non-profit business coalition focused on health care quality and affordability. 60 large purchaser members with $12 billion annual health care spend in CA alone.

Director, New Initiatives

Created a portfolio of value-based reimbursement programs where PBGH members partnered directly with the delivery system. Raised 90 percent of funding from outside grants in first 9 months; formed and led team to design and implement:

  • Domestic travel surgery COE program for hip and knee replacements. Developed selection metrics and chose four COEs across the U.S. Designed episode bundled payment methodology and consistent member experience across COEs.  Launched program in 9 months for employers representing 1.5 million lives.

  • Value based maternity care program designed to promote shared decision making and reduce unnecessary c-sections. Program includes episode payment, a data registry and quality improvement programs.

  • Intensive ambulatory care model (AICU) for patients with complex medical conditions. Successful pilot led to $19 million grant to expand the program.

  • Demonstration project to incorporate shared decision making tools in orthopedics and maternity care.

Executive Director, California Joint Replacement Registry (Concurrent with Director of New Initiatives)

Led the formation of and managed the California Joint Replacement Registry, a multi-institution registry of hip and knee replacements in CA. Registry grew over 4 years to 48 participating hospitals, representing over 45% of procedures performed annually in CA. Registry is among the first of its kind in the U.S. to collect and analyze patients’ clinical data, implant information and longitudinal functional and pain status. Registry was acquired by national joint replacement registry in 2015.

 

 

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Oakland, California

Led national and select CA product development. Designed and brought to market products across Kaiser’s seven independent operating units. Reconciled independent P&Ls, IT systems and market strategies to deliver consistent product offering. Established common metrics and implemented repeatable product management and development processes.  Cut cycle time in half.

Established external consulting practice within this physician practice management organization of Kaiser Permanente, which represented 10,000 physicians. Developed customized delivery system for General Motors (GM) in Dayton, OH. 

 

Director, New Venture Development                                                                                                                             

Established national New Venture Development Department and managed $10 million fund to spread innovation and take promising ideas to market.

 

Director, Market Planning and Product Development                                                                               

Established and led Kaiser's first Product Development Department in California, taking Kaiser from a single to multiple product line company. Developed and managed portfolio of new insurance products, including Point of Service, 24-hour Workers’ Compensation and Medicare Risk.
